When my husband and I bought the old Tommy's Elbow Room building on 2nd Avenue in downtown Fairbanks a couple years ago, we had dreams of renovating the abandoned building into a place for the community to happily gather once again.
In short order, we were overwhelmed. Luckily, we had the good fortune of being introduced to Jonathan Pollen of JD Construction, who, without batting an eye, stepped in to assess the situation, make a detailed list of the work that needed to be accomplished, and provide us with an accurate and reasonable price quote. He then proceeded to accomplish an immense amount of work within the timeframe he had outlined.
We were beyond impressed. To be honest, I am not sure we would have made it through those first few bleak months of property ownership and renovation without Jon!
During that time, he communicated wonderfully with us on his progress. He tackled the most problematic and difficult of jobs with enthusiasm, was always eager to talk over various improvement options, and was flexible on the occasions when we changed our minds. On top of all of that, the work he did struck the hard to reach balance between quality and affordability, with great attention to design and functionality.
Today, the renovations that Jon accomplished have allowed us to fill the ground floor of this historic building with successfully rented retail spaces, including a mediation center and a dance studio with a custom built dance floor made by JD Construction. We are eager to work on more space renovations with Jon and look forward to a lasting relationship.

“JD Construction served as the designer and general contractor for our 2,000 square foot house addition on Chena Ridge in 2008 and 2009. This was a complex project adjoining an ARXX foundation and wall system to the existing home, which had been built with a different type of concrete and foam foundation (“Loc-Block”) and 12” thick double wall framed construction in 1983. Jon did a great job planning the integration of the two building systems and managing the various subcontractors as the project progressed. The final product is magnificent.

We couldn’t be more pleased with the new space, particularly the large well laid out kitchen and new master bedroom, bath, closet, and laundry on the second floor. Jon was able to arrange for a H&V contractor to use our existing forced air duct work in the old part of the house and integrate that with the in-slab hydronic heating system in the new part. The result with the new boiler is we now heat twice the space comfortably for less fuel than we used previously for the hot air system, even after saving a significant sum on the new boiler.

Overall, the detailed work Jon accomplished was innovative and eye-catching. A great example is the porch where he used the old cedar siding for the finish work under the overhanging roof, which nicely offsets the cable rail, vertical spruce posts, and Trex decking work. We are enjoying the new addition every day and are very pleased with our selection of contractor. Admittedly, we are Jon’s proud parents, but if we weren’t already, and he had accomplished what he did with this magnificent project we would adopt him.”

With higher fuel prices, we wanted to do a window upgrade. After tackling the easy windows, we decided to hire out the more complicated bays and bow.

We didn’t have a preferred contractor so Spenard’s gave us a list.

John, of JDC, returned our call, and came to our home promptly for an estimate. He patiently listened to our wants and concerns, and answered all of our questions. We felt very comfortable with his ability and professionalism.

During framing and installation he was as meticulous as I myself would have been, down to the smallest details.

The job was done on time, on budget, and most importantly, clean and neat.

We would hire John again if the need arises. We were completely satisfied with his work, and would highly recommend JDC.
